Occupational Therapist Spotlight

Every Friday morning we are blessed to have Nikki join our classroom fun. Nikki's role as Occupational Therapist is to implement therapy into the classroom by planning engaging activities that stimulate sensory needs, assist with internal balance, and build motor skills.

She supports me in giving suggestions about placements and behavior management, and is a true advocate for the kids. Another aspect of her job is collaborating between special education teachers and general education teachers when students spend more time in other classrooms. The sensory room is another place we often find her at work, as well as working with us at snack time to help students become adjusted to a wider variety of food textures and flavors.

This week our students dipped cut apples in paint, laid on a swing, and painted a colorful poster. Thanks for all your help Nikki! If you have any questions for her, you can contact her at nikki@muncie.k12.in.us.

All About Apples!

This week we have learned all about apples!

Our book for the week has been Chicka, Chika, 123. This book is similar to Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, but with more focus on numbers on an apple tree instead of letters on a coconut tree.

Our class has formed applesauce play-doh, created apple books, and learned some new apple songs. We have also practiced skills such as sequencing, identifying colors, and sorting sizes.

During this week, our letter has been A for apple! Making big and little As with our applesauce play-doh has been a lot of fun. We have also been reviewing numbers 1-10, even making an apple counting book with pictures.

Apple Orchard Fieldtrip!

Some highlights of our trip:

-Touring the building where they sort apples and make cider and donuts
-Tasting apple cider slush and donuts
-Climbing a huge pile of hay
-Searching through inflatable mazes
-Riding a hay wagon around the orchard

We clearly had fun at Jacob's Orchard! Our next field trip will be to a Christmas tree farm where we will explore the trees, sit with Santa, try some cocoa and cookies, and decorate a tree! More information will be sent home soon.
